A Cherokee County inmate was pronounced dead Wednesday after jail staff found him unresponsive in his cell, prompting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
CCSO Jail Deputies found Joseph Russell, 49, of Jacksonville, unconscious in his jail cell and quickly began life-saving measures as well as contacting EMS.
First Responders arrived immediately and he was transported to UT Health in Jacksonville, where he it was determined he would not survive.
The circumstances surrounding his passing have raised numerous questions and concerns within the community, prompting officials to delve deeper into the events leading up to this tragic incident.
According to the press release issued this week, his death was reported to the Texas Commission on Jail Standards, as per state regulations. The TCJS requires the investigation to be conducted by the Texas Rangers.
