Cherokee County Commissioners Proclaim Oct 4-10 National 4-H Week

Cherokee County Commissioners proclaimed the week of Oct 4 -10 as National 4-H Week. Commissioners also declared the same week Texas Extension Education Association Week.

The organization’s mission is to strengthen and enrich families through education and leadership development through community service.

The Court also approved the renewal of the retiree health insurance plan for county employees.

Commissioners also approved a request for holiday pay for qualifying Sheriff’s Department employees for Nov. and Dec 2026, as well as Jan 2027.

An interlocal agreement between Neches and Trinity Valley Groundwater Conservation District and Cherokee County was also approved.

As part of the agreement Cherokee County will provide $100,000 for a continuing legal effort to prevent a large volume of ground water being taken for industrial purposes from the Carrizo-Wilcox Aquifer.

Cherokee County joins Henderson as well as other East Texas counties in the effort, and will make the payment by Jan. 15, 2027

The County approved the construction of Travis Letter monument it will be placed on the Southeast portion of the county courthouse lawn.

Commissioners also approved the collection of mandatory payment for the Cherokee County Local Provider Participation Fund for Fiscal Year 2026.

A request for precincts to sell equipment on Auctioneer Express was also approved.

Commissioners approved a motion allowing Pct. 3 Commissioner, Patrick Reagan, to transfer $5000 of his budgeted funds from an Equipment rental line item into his machinery repair budget.

Commissioners also set a public hearing on Oct. 27 to consider changing the speed limit on County Roads 4608, 4610, 4705, and 4709.

A motion allowing permission for Precinct #4 road and bridge employees to enter private property in order to clean out the ditch adjacent to CR 4201 was approved.

Precinct 4 Road and Bridge employees will enter that property to remove dirt from the ditch on CR 4101.

The ditch overflows on to the county road during inclement weather.

Commissioners were updated about the structural damage at the Sheriff’s Office. No action followed the presentation on Tuesday.

No action was taken after a presentation from HDR contractors the item is likely to be considered at a future meeting of the Commissioners Court.

The decision followed a public hearing.

Commissioners also continued discussions concerning the long-term goals and plans for the County.

The consent agenda was also approved prior to the meeting’s adjournment.

The Cherokee County Commissioners’ Court meet regularly on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month.

Commissioners Court meetings are being held at 9 a.m. in the County courtroom inside the Cherokee County Courthouse in Rusk.
